The adaptation of human strains of poliomyelitis virus isolated in Kansas in 1946 to Swiss mice and cotton rats using autolyzed brain extracts has not been achieved in the experiments reported herein. 2. An infectious agent isolated from the brains of mice inoculated with tissues containing poliomyelitis virus has been identified as lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.
