Zusammenfassung:Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal energy exists in rocks away from permeable fractures systems, where cooling is by conduction through the rocks. One system of exploiting hdr energy being developed at LANL is described in detail, and high temperature geothermal resources are discussed in general. Lower temperature heat sources are also investigated, and heat extraction experiments currently in progress are presented. The economic feasibility of hdr energy is assessed.
