Zusammenfassung:	A brief historical and political perspective of National Health Insurance is presented. The author examines the factors weighing for and against enactment of a comprehensive, government funded and administered plan. He concludes that, although development and reform in the direction of comprehensive NHI may occur, and enactment of a Mini-NHI plan is possible, full scale NHI is unlikely prior to the next presidential election.
