The application of weather radar to transport problems in the United Kingdom

The U.K. weather radar network now represents the most extensive and technologically advanced system of its kind in Europe. Measurement of precipitation type by radar, image storage, and retrieval by independent users are discussed. Applications are emerging in weather forecasting, water management, and winter maintenance of transport systems. In providing an early warning of precipitation, weather radar could ensure that crews are sent out to salt or clear roads in areas likely to receive precipitation in the near future. Hazards to aviation can also be detected.
