On a 3D extension of the MOTIF method (ISO 12085)

The 3D-motif method, which is a powerful tool for surface morphology characterization, was analyzed. This method was applied to isotropic sandblasted surfaces and the mean flatness coefficient of the 3D-motifs was introduced which could be used to evaluate the adherence of paint on such surfaces. Zusammenfassung:The 3D-motif method, which is a powerful tool for surface morphology characterization, was analyzed. This method was applied to isotropic sandblasted surfaces and the mean flatness coefficient of the 3D-motifs was introduced which could be used to evaluate the adherence of paint on such surfaces. It was also applied to the inverted surface of the cylinder liner surface to obtain watersheds corresponding to the paths followed by the lubricating fluid. It could be used on different kinds of engineering surfaces as no assumption is made about the 3D-motif form.
