Zusammenfassung:Paul Karrer was born of Swiss parents on 21 April 1889 in Moscow where his father practised as a dentist. The family originated from Teufenthal and Oberentfelden in the canton of Aargau. They returned to Switzerland in 1892 and lived for the first three years in Erlenbach near Zurich. The rest of Karrer’s childhood and his years of adolescence were spent in the small country parish of Wildegg again in Aargau, from where he attended the primary school in nearby Moriken, the district school in Lenzburg and the excellent gymnasium in Aarau, where teaching was based on the motto of ‘Observe, think and then speak’, an axiom to which Karrer held fast for the rest of his life. Here he was encouraged to take up a scientific career.
