Ionized Ca in neonates in relation to gestational age

Zusammenfassung:The relationship of gestational age to serum calcium levels in the neonate has been demonstrated experimentally by measuring the ionized calcium (iCa) fraction of the blood. Determination of iCa in 43 AGA infants and their mothers was made using an Orion electrode. The iCa values at 24 hours of age correlated with gestational age but not with birth weight. Factors other than gestational age influence iCa. Infant iCa levels at birth were significantly higher than maternal values. The decrease in serum iCa after birth was inversely related to the iCa levels in the cord blood.
