Indian Ocean Actively Deforms

The Indian Ocean offers a rare opportunity to study intraplate deformation of oceanic lithosphere. Deformation in the Indian Ocean was first proposed in the 1970s to resolve the difficulties in fitting global plate motion using a single rigid Indo-Australian plate.
