Ageostrophic geopotential fluxes in downstream and upstream development of baroclinic waves

A simple primitive equation model is used to demonstrate that the convergence/divergence of ageostrophic geopotential fluxes can be a major source/sink of kinetic energy for both downstream and upstream development of baroclinic waves.
