Despite Problems, "Masculinity" is a Vital Construct

Despite the shortcomings of the masculinity contruct, it nevertheless has considerable benefits for understanding and helping troubled men. Furthermore, although there can be distortion of the construct to promote essentialist reactivity, this is not inevitable. Ultimately, it may not be necessary to differentiate people according to gender. In the meantime, however, we must recognize the salience of the construct as we help persons overcome its inherent restrictions.
