The biochemistry of fatty liver and kidney syndrome of the fowl ( gallus domesticus): Effects of fasting and fasting/re-feeding on renal gluconeogenesis in chicks fed on the syndrome-inducing diet

1. 1. Chicks fed an FLKS-inducing diet (but not showing signs of the syndrome) develop a slightly more severe hypoglycaemia on fasting than do controls. 2. 2. The relative increase in gluconcogenesis by kidney slices from these chicks was greater for the precursors fructose, glycerol, lactate and py...

Zusammenfassung:1. 1. Chicks fed an FLKS-inducing diet (but not showing signs of the syndrome) develop a slightly more severe hypoglycaemia on fasting than do controls. 2. 2. The relative increase in gluconcogenesis by kidney slices from these chicks was greater for the precursors fructose, glycerol, lactate and pyruvate than for controls. In the case of glycerol and pyruvate this was due to significantly lower rates of gluconeogenesis in the fed state. 3. 3. The activities of renal glucose 6-phosphatase and pyruvate carboxylase rose to significantly higher values after fasting than in controls.
