Zusammenfassung: | The history, physiology, and clinical application of the fetal preejection period (PEP) are reviewed. Early results from animal experiments have been validated for the human fetus and suggest that measurement of PEP might aid in perinatal management decisions. Many initial technical problems have been overcome and prototype PEP monitors are now available for monitoring during the intrapartum and neonatal period. However, it is likely that the ultimate utility of PEP determinations will be in suspected cases of fetal compromise warranting comprehensive cardiovascular assessment. |
