Use of the certified nurse-midwife in the education of the lay-midwife

Increasing numbers of homebirths and a lack of professional birth attendants providing home birth care necessitates the use of the “new breed” of lay-midwives. There is a critical need for lay-midwife training programs. The author describes her experience in one such program and recommends the use of CNMs in meeting this need.
