Zusammenfassung:	The authors briefly review present understanding of the ways in which the benzodiazepine receptor is involved in the modulation of GABA mediated transmission in the mammalian central nervous system. They rightly point to the importance of the early electrophysiological studies with the benzodiazepines in providing the clues for the association of the action of these drugs with this important inhibitory neurotransmitter.
