Topographical distribution of estrogen-concentrating cells in the brain and pituitary of the squirrel monkey

The specific anatomical patternof cells that concentrate estradiol in the brain and pituitary of ovariectomized squirrel monkey was determined by radioautography. In the brain, a nuclear concentration of radioactivity was observed in neurons which are accumulated in specific areas including the preoptic area, the medio basal area of the hypothalamus (n. infundibularis, n. premammillaris) and the amygdala. In the anterior pituitary a large number of estrogen-binding cells were seen. No significant labeling was observed in the intermediate and posterior lobes.
