Zusammenfassung:: Bioreactor design in tissue engineering is complex, and at the early stages of its development. Design of biologically effective, yet scalable, devices requires intimate collaboration between engineers and biologists to ensure that all aspects are considered fully. Growth conditions, harvesting time, scale‐up, storage, and sterility issues all need to be considered and incorporated into the design of bioreactors. Each tissue‐engineered product will likely require individualized bioreactor design. However, without a comprehensive understanding of each of these components, bioreactor design and tissue growth to manufacture product will remain at a relatively rudimentary and limited level. Increased fundamental understanding of the issues can have a dramatic impact on the ability to generate tissue‐engineered product safely, economically, and in the numbers that are required to fully address the patient populations in need.
