Zusammenfassung:The aim of this human study was to objective diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMG) changes after supraombilical laparotomy. The surface diaphragmatic EMG was recorded in patients (before and after laparotomy), and in healthy volunteers, during standardized inspiratory efforts sustained at –30 cmH2O (Müller manoeuvres). The quantitative EMG analysis showed significant postoperative modifications: the root mean square (RMS) increased and the median frequency (MF) decreased. These modifications are compatible with an altered diaphragmatic excitability and/or a reduced central drive to the diaphragm.
