Report of three case studies with olanzapine for chronic pain

Olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic, has broad spectrum psychotropic effects, affecting dopamine receptors 1, 2, and 3, 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A, 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C, muscarinic, alpha-adrenergic, alpha-adrenergic, and histamine H-sites. This unique pharmacologic property allows clinicians to use...

Zusammenfassung:Olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic, has broad spectrum psychotropic effects, affecting dopamine receptors 1, 2, and 3, 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A, 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C, muscarinic, alpha-adrenergic, alpha-adrenergic, and histamine H-sites. This unique pharmacologic property allows clinicians to use the agent as an adjunct for pain control, particularly when the intensity of the pain is exacerbated by dysregulation of neurotransmitters. Three case studies are presented from a suburban family practice setting in which olanzapine has been successfully used to regulate pain perception in adults with chronic pain.
