Rib abnormalities arising before and after birth

Rib abnormalities detected in the neonatal period are usually thought to be part of a skeletal disorder. There are, however, many causes which include metabolic bone disease, infection and trauma. Rib abnormalities are also found in general disorders such as chromosomal abnormalities or hypothyroidism. A thorough examination of the neonatal chest radiograph must include the review of the skeletal parts, which can often be revealing.
