Effect of habitual smoking on QT interval duration and dispersion

Acute cardiac events such as ventricular fibrillation and sudden death are increased by cigarette smoking, particularly in the presence of preexisting coronary artery disease. However, the underlying trigger mechanisms are poorly understood. Ileri et al address directly whether long-term exposure to cigarette smoking alters the QT interval and QT dispersion compared with age-matched nonsmokers.
