Gastric Volvulus Detected With Iodine-131 Whole-Body Imaging

Organoaxial gastric volvulus was detected on a I-131 whole-body scan in a 79-year-old man with thyroid cancer with metastatic disease within his lower cervical and upper thoracic spine. He had recently undergone thyroidectomy, debulking of his metastatic disease, and many I-131 treatments. During an additional I-131 ablation, an abnormal appearance of the stomach was noted. This was thought to represent a gastric volvulus. An upper gastrointestinal study later confirmed the possible diagnosis. This is the first report of organoaxial gastric volvulus detected on a I-131 whole-body scan.
