Ethical Implications of a New Application of Preimplantation Diagnosis

An editorial addresses a study by Verlinsky et al that is the first and only known experience in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) performed with HLA antigen testing on embryos of a couple not only desiring to avoid the birth of a child affected with Fanconi anemia, but also to establish a healthy pregnancy to provide an HLA match for an affected sibling requiring stem cell transplantation.
