Zusammenfassung:OSTIA, the ancient port of Rome, founded probably about the third century B.C., considerably extends our present knowledge of the Roman habitation. The remains of some of the buildings can be assigned to the Republican period, and opus quadratum walling is fairly common, but in many cases it has been used as foundations for later buildings. A few buildings of the Augustan period remain, the most notable being the theatre.
