Zusammenfassung:The evolution and formulation of new dental ceramics in the 20th century are reviewed. The development of metal-bonding porcelains freed dentists from using gold-veneered crowns as retainers. Porcelain crowns could be reinforced with metal, making fracture less common. In the 1960s high-alumina and aluminous porcelains replaced metal and further evolution has improved the aesthetics of porcelain restoration. 34 refs.
