Zusammenfassung:Grasshopper Spathosternum prasiniferum, fish Anabas testudineus, and mice Mus musculus were exposed to ultrasonic irradiation, and cytogenetic effects were assessed. The test animals were exposed to sonication for 1 min, rested for 1 min, and then exposed to sonication again for 1 min at an output of 70%. The animals were then sacrificed at 2, 24, and 48 h after sonication and examined. In grasshoppers, structural chromosomal damages were maximal at 2 h, while no chromosomal break type or any other major type aberration was observed in fish and mice. In the latter two species, however, clastogenic effects of lesser significance were observed, particularly at the early intervals. In mice, the mitotic index of bone marrow cells was enhanced slightly, and there was an elevated frequency of aberrations in the germinal chromosomes. Upon repeated exposure to ultrasonic irradiation, the effects appeared to be cumulative in mice.
