If a physician confronts a legal dilemma, then he should consult a reputably attorney or attempt to acquire a court decision. There are many instances when the requirements of ethical codes are incompatible with the legal interest; the consensus holds that the latter take priority. A number of frequently experienced situations are described in which physicians may face a dilemma, & the current consensual perspective on that dilemma is discussed. K. Coddon
