Zusammenfassung: | Schiff—the man and the base: Hugo Schiff (1834–1915) studied with Friedrich Wöhler in Germany, but because of his liberal views spent almost his entire career in Italy, where he prepared and characterized Schiff bases (imines) and made many other chemical investigations. His scientific career spanned more than 60 years, and he lived to see the utilization of Schiff bases in [2+2] cycloadditions with ketenes to form β‐lactams. |
