Zusammenfassung:Initial Worldwide Experience With the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage System for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation Peter B. Sick, Gerhard Schuler, Karl Eugen. Hauptmann, Eberhard Grube, Steve Yakubov, Zoltan G. Turi, Gregory Mishkel, Steve Almany, David R. Holmes In atrial fibrillation (AF)-related strokes, if thrombus formation is present in left atrium, more than 90% are in the appendage. This represents the first worldwide experience with the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage System (Atritech Inc., Plymouth, Minnesota). Major adverse events such as pericardial effusions, air embolism, and device embolizations occurred primarily with a first-generation version of the device and during operator learning curves. Device-related thrombus formation in 4 patients resolved with additional anticoagulation. There were no strokes during follow-up despite discontinuation of anticoagulation. Preliminary data suggest the WATCHMAN System to be a safe and feasible approach to sealing of the LAA in AF.
