Zusammenfassung:The history of audit is traced over the past 30 years demonstrating how it has come to dominate attempts to improve the quality of patient care in British general practice. Nevertheless it is still uncertain whether audit usually or occasionally yields such improvements. There is much more to learn about audit including whether any benefits it brings are through professional education.
