Sinister hiccups
The most frequent cause of persistent hiccup is gastrointestinal disease,1 although pneumonia can also be the cause.2 Inflammation of the lower lobe of the right lung, such as is often found in aspiration pneumonia,1 can stimulate the phrenic nerves.
