Reilly CXCL16 is a protein with scavenger receptor and inflammatory chemokine function. Its role in atherosclerosis remains uncertain. We found that inflammatory signals that promote atherosclerosis also induce CXCL16 in vitro and in vivo. Soluble CXCL16 levels were positively associated with coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndromes. Our studies suggest a pro-inflammatory role for CXCL16 in human atherosclerotic syndromes.
