Presently, the choice of cooling techniques appears to be divided between internal and external cooling. Without comparison studies between these forms of cooling, surface cooling or external techniques have the shared advantage from the two successful trials in cardiac arrest. Ongoing, randomized, controlled studies comparing the Medivance Arctic Sun Temperature Management System with conventional cooling will provide more useful information to help determine the safest and most effective method to implement this form of therapy in our critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients.
