SO far, these formulae have been put together without making mention of mechanical principles, on the assumption that experiment would demonstrate the truth of the laws I have laid down; but as I have already stated, there are other methods of investigating the subject, methods founded on mechanical principles, and which are absolutely necessary for a complete investigation of it, not only as far as we have gone, but especially for the more advanced portions
