Zusammenfassung:The early days of the teaching of Indonesian at the University of Sydney are discussed. The various lecturers and textbooks used in those years are mentioned. This year, 2008, marks the fiftieth anniversary of teaching Indonesian and Malay at the University of Sydney - which still continues. The teaching of these languages at Sydney led eventually to the foundation of the Review of Indonesian and Malayan Studies (RIMA). A version of this material was delivered at the Indonesia Council Open Conference at Monash University in September 2007 as part of a project on the teaching of these languages in Australia being undertaken by Paul Thomas.
