National Welfare States, European Integration and Globalization:A Perspective for the Next Century

Considers how European integration will affect national welfare states, arguing that the 21st century provides a special window of opportunity for re-embedding the post-WWII welfare state compact at the European level. Such a compact may be a mixture of European "re-insurance" of basic welfare elements, European Community-wide integrated welfare state reform efforts, & sectoral "buffer insurance" (eg, for European Monetary Union in the area of unemployment).
