Was Jean Carbonnier a law anthropologist? Such a perspective would certainly have enriched & honored this discipline, but the question must be answered in the negative, for two reasons essentially. Firstly because the horizon of his approach remains within the boundaries of western tradition, & secondly because his concern with "ethnographic" description did not lead him to generalizations or to scientific laws which he seemed wary of.
