Plurilingualism and the Promotion of a Minority Language: Tensions and Contradictions

In present-day Catalonia, schools have to deal with the challenges of increasing plurilingualism among pupils, satisfy social demands for language-tuition & fulfill their historical role of transmitting the Catalan language. We explore current discourse in the world of Catalan schooling. Our theoretical approach seeks to combine the postulates of linguistic anthropology & qualitative sociolinguistics with social-interaction-based postulates on language learning. By analyzing interviews & official documents, we examine the shared points & highlight the tensions & contradictions which can be observed in the formulation of various discourses. References.
