| Zusammenfassung: | How trade secrecy arrangements affect research depends on the research industry. It is argued that trade secrecy has a worse effect on research into artificial intelligence than on research in other industries, based on a case study in which software researchers felt a conflict between their trade secrecy obligations & an intellectual commitment to their scientific community. While this conflict is due in part to special features of software research, it is also due to special features of patent & copyright policy that are used with trade secrets to protect innovative software.
