Zusammenfassung:This paper discusses the potential direct and indirect impacts of the unfolding technoeconomic revolution upon the ecosystems of Latin America. The results of simulation models of current trends suggest widespread ecological degradation associated with existing land use. A more sustainable development path, however, is ecologically and technologically possible. Its implementation will require active and continued environmental policies, integrated within new social and economic ones, strongly supported by science and technology. Finally, suggestions are made regarding potential directions and applications for science and technology in Latin America which would have an environmentally positive impact and thereby contribute to the necessary shift to a more sustainable development path.
