Between Popular Movements and Professional Manners: A Transborder Community Economic Development Training Project

After reviewing European Community Commission policy relative to transborder training projects & offering some examples of such schemes, one such ongoing project designed to facilitate urban community development in the border region of Derry, Northern Ireland, & Donegal, Republic of Ireland, is described. The historical background of the project is outlined, along with its curriculum & structure, which have involved cooperation between two universities & two political jurisdictions. A preliminary evaluation of the project after one year of operation indicates that such community development training can create viable & socially useful jobs in marginal regions where previous strategies have failed.
