Zusammenfassung:Voluntary organisations and volunteer action are new pheno‐mena in post‐Soviet Russia. Despite growing needs, cultural and socio‐economic barriers preclude their massive development. Characteristics of the volunteers and organisational conditions that enabled this success were identified and lessons drawn.
