Zusammenfassung: | This article provides a psycho-social analysis of African American women's and men's vulnerabilities and resiliency by analyzing the characters in Ann Petry's 1946 novel The Street The article also (1) reviews current research on the intersection of racism, sexism, and economic oppression; (2) traces origins of the Bad Man and Bad Woman stereotypes; (3) analyzes the impact of the stereotypes on African American relationships; and (4) offers recommendations for moving away from brokenness and toward positive, nurturing relationships. |
