Introduction

Introduces a special journal issue (see abstracts of related articles) that explores how the study of ancient Mediterranean cultures contributes to the writing of the history of gender, & how scholarship on these ancient cultures has influenced -- & been influenced by -- the development of modern theories of family, religion, property, class, & sexuality. These works constitute a formidable challenge to male-centered theories. Common themes of body & gender are found in this disparate collection of essays.
