References to the Koran in Islamic Religious Broadcasts in France. A Contribution to the Study of the Relationship to Islam's Holy Text

Innovations introduced by French TV broadcasts, 1983-1995, to the traditional set of religious rules (the ordo) regulating the relationship to the sacred text of the Koran are analyzed. The approach taken by writers of material for the weekly morning program "Connaitre l'Islam" (Getting Familiar with Islam) departs from the ordo's conventions concerning the script, preservation, reproduction, & diffusion of the text of the Holy Koran. Because TV production standards are visually- & French language-oriented, these broadcasts have given French translations of the Arabic texts cited & have experimented with representational imagery. Mostly adhering to the traditional ordo, program hosts & guests routinely chant verses of the Koran & draw on Koranic passages in their spiritual messages, but avoid Koranic hermeneutics. J. Sadler
