Zusammenfassung:Nigeria has many environmental problems, but one of the least understood is that of degradation of the physical environment through soil erosion. This specific problem is explored as it is related to the development of Auchi in Bendel State. The growth of Auchi from a small settlement with a population of almost 6,500 in 1952 to one estimated at 35,000 in 1979, & the transition from Ru to Ur status, has resulted in serious problems for the physical environment. A conceptual framework is outlined, & then the physical environment of Auchi is described. Conclusions & recommendations are made following a discussion of the collection, analysis, & interpretation of data obtained in 1978, when Auchi was declared a disaster area by the state government. 5 Tables, 2 Figures.
