The Nationality Factor in Soviet Stability: Western Scholarship Revisited

A review article based on five books on the nationality problem in the USSR, posing the question of whether Western specialists on the USSR failed to appreciate its importance. The books reviewed address the nature of nationalism in the Soviet Union, whether it was ethnic or civic; cultural, economic or political; elite, mass or fringe; historically rooted or created in the Soviet period; religious or secular.
