Treatment in the community in the absence of consent

Mental health policy is increasingly based on the ethical principle that treatment should occur in the least restrictive environment possible. Examined here is the experience of extended leave of absence in Scotland, & in England & Wales before 1986. The recent evidence for an increased risk of violence & homicide in schizophrenia is examined, noting the danger of a backlash against community care if it is perceived as unsafe.
