Zusammenfassung: | The current devaluation of interpersonal speech is investigated. Speech, defined as an essential social link, is divided into private, public, & religious/poetic speech. It is noted that people speak to one another less & less even within the context of their families, & particularly among young people. Several reasons for the reduced emphasis on speech are offered, with modern media receiving much of the blame. The size of one's vocabulary is tied to the degree to which he or she communicates with others, & it is shown that a child's vocabulary can be reflected by the TV programs watched.
