Zusammenfassung: | This study examines use of maja costume to express the Andalusian image of Spain. The visual appearance of the costume is described and its wearers are identified. Portraits and other works of art, extant costumes, and travel accounts were the primary sources of data. Works of art and stage productions, including ballets with Spanish themes, traveling Spanish dance troupes, and Bizet's opera Carmen have contributed to and perpetuated the Andalusian image of Spain. The use of the maja costume to symbolize Andalusia and Spain is discussed. |
