Zusammenfassung: | Argues that sibling support among the elderly is underutilized by both siblings themselves & the helping professions. The need to care for a parent often brings siblings who have been in little contact back together. Also, changes in family structures often mean that siblings are the only source of support for each other. Specific examples of these situations are described. The problem of unresolved differences, close sibling friendships, sibling estrangement, & changes in roles caused by death are discussed. Helping professionals should consider the complexity of sibling dynamics, be honest about their own sibling-related feelings to avoid countertransference, & be aware that older adult clients are as likely as younger ones to have sibling relationships. 14 References.
